The ballet ‘Sleeping Beauty’ or ‘Sleeping Beauty’, with an elegant score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, is a wonderful example of the classical ballet at the end of the 19th century. It grew into one of the most famous ballets and is still on the repertoire of all leading companies. ‘Sleeping Beauty’ allows dancers to dance at their highest level. The beautiful scenery and costumes, together with the indestructible story, ensure an unforgettable spectacle for the whole family.

What is it about?

Based on the fairy tale of Charles Perrault, the ballet tells the story of Princess Aurora. At her baptism she receives the magical blessing of all the kingdom’s fairies, among them the Lilac fairy. They express their wishes and they must ensure that the princess grows up to be the most beautiful woman, the most graceful dancer, the sweetest singer and the most beautiful musician.

However, the happy party is interrupted by the arrival of the evil fairy Carabosse, who is angry because she was not invited. She gets her gram from the royal couple, who refers her to their master of ceremony Catalabutte. After all, he was responsible for the guest list. Carabosse deals with the master of ceremony, but that does not cool her anger. She curses Princess Aurora: the girl will poke herself on a coil on her sixteenth birthday and die. Carabosse disappears and leaves those present deeply shocked. The Lilac Fairy, who had not yet given her gift, can only soften Carabosses curse: the princess will not die but will sleep a hundred years. Only the love kiss of a prince can awaken her again.

Princess Aurora grows up carefree and four princes come to court her on her sixteenth birthday. After she has danced with all four, she enters the garden alone. There she meets a disguised stranger. It is none other than Carabosse who offers her a coil. Before anyone can stop her, Aurora has already poked herself. She falls down and seems to be dead. But then the Lilac Fairy appears. It enchants Aurora and all castle residents: everyone falls asleep and the castle is ‘swallowed’ by a thorn forest.

A hundred years later, Prince Désiré and his entourage are hunting. But the hunt bores him and he only goes further into the forest. There he meets the Lilac Fairy, who tells him about the enchanted castle and the sleeping Aurora. When the prince sees Aurora in a vision for him, he is madly in love. The lilac fairy takes him to the thorn-filled castle. Not without difficulty the prince makes his way through the spiky branches. He finds Princess Aurora in a tower room and kisses her awake, breaking the curse of Carabosse. All’s well that ends well: there is a big wedding party, with many fairy-tale characters among the guests. Even Carabosse is present, but not heartily. She must face her painful defeat.
